The Israel and the United Nations are locked in a bitter spat, after UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday night said that the Hamas attacks of October 7 “did not happen in a vacuum”.

Guterres’s comments, at a UN Security Council meeting, sparked outrage from Israel, whose ambassador, Gilad Erdan asked the UN boss to resign, accusing Guterres of justifying terrorism. Israel has since said it will refuse visas to UN officials.

While Guterres condemned the Hamas attacks, he added, “The Palestinian people have been subjected to 56 years of suffocating occupation.”

The United States of America in recent statement from the Democratic Presidential candidate and Vice President, Kamala Harris has repeated calls for de-escalation of the conflict despite standing with Israel and referring to Hamas as a terrorist organization.

On the diplomatic fronts, the several Security Council meetings has demanded ceasefire in the region geared towards putting a stop to the suffering of the Palestinian people.

Several condemnation on Hamas has been made known but this does not appease Israel as they continue the fight inside Gaza and its environs.

Several world leaders including the UN Boss continue to expresses concern for civilians suffering and urged that all diplomatic efforts are made to avoid an escalation of violence.

Both the United States and the UN have reiterated their support and appeal for the release of hostages and additionally requested that Israel allow humanitarian aid access into the Gaza Strip. These calls are yet to yield fruits as the fighting continue with no end to the suffering of the Palestinian people.

Two resolutions proposed in four of the meetings have failed: the first was proposed by Russia which did not get enough votes whereas the second was drafted by Brazil which was vetoed by the US.

Dozens of Palestinians including those resident in Gaza have fled their homes and have sought refuge in 64 United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) schools.

Is the UN failing the people of Palestine by allowing suffering of women and children? With the killing and suffering in Gaza when will this conflict comes to and end.
