Caritas Zoom in on 2024 University Graduation

Caritas Exploring the Bittersweet Reality of Graduation in Sierra Leone: A Personal Reflection by Fr. Peter Konteh, the Executive Director of Caritas Sierra Leone - Freetown"

“Congratulations to the thousands of students who are graduating from our various universities and colleges today! This is a momentous occasion and a joyful milestone in your lives,” said Fr. Peter Konteh.

The Rev, Father however noted that, amid this joy, there is a stark reality that we cannot ignore.

“In our beloved country, Sierra Leone, job opportunities are limited. There are graduates from five years ago who are still seeking employment. It's disheartening to note that job offers are often based on connections, bribes, or unfortunately, sexual offers for females. This is a harsh truth we must confront,” Fr. Konteh noted.

He said at this juncture, Fr. Konteh personally encourage the young graduates to consider self-employment and to develop entrepreneurial skills. In this technological era, there are numerous opportunities to be creative and successful, without having a conventional white-collar job.

“Your skills and creativity can propel you towards a rewarding career, which may be even more gratifying than a monthly salary. Let's challenge the status quo and create opportunities where they seem scarce.

As you celebrate your graduation, I pray that you will not only find job opportunities but that these will be based on your qualifications and competence, not connections,” he said.

Once again, a hearty congratulations to all graduates. Your journey is just beginning, and I believe in your ability to create positive change towards your own development and the country.
