Sustaining Peace With Religious Leader…

Fr. Peter Konteh Calls

By Mohamed Konneh

The Executive Director of Caritas Freetown, Rev. Fr. Peter Konteh has called for the sustenance of peace among religious leaders. Father Konteh was speaking on Monday this week as the country draws closer to the 24th general and Presidential elections.

"Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow." - Isaiah 1:17, said Father Konteh

The Catholic Priest said "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled." - Matthew 5:6.

"Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy." - Proverbs 31:8-9, he said.’

Father Konteh said Religious leaders in Sierra Leone have been actively involved in promoting justice and human rights in their communities. They have spoken out against corruption, violence, discrimination, and other social injustices, and have called for the government and other authorities to take action to address these issues.

He said religious leaders have also been engaged in promoting peace and reconciliation in the aftermath of the country's civil war, and have played a key role in mediating conflicts and building bridges between different communities.

Father Konteh noted added that, religious organizations in Sierra Leone have been involved in providing social services and support to those in need, including education, healthcare, and humanitarian assistance.

Overall, religious leaders in Sierra Leone have been a strong voice for justice and peace in their communities, and have made important contributions to the country's development and stability.

‘Religious leaders can play an important role in ensuring peaceful and fair elections in Sierra Leone by promoting voter education, encouraging peaceful dialogue, and advocating for respect for human rights and the rule of law. They can also help to mitigate tensions and prevent the spread of fake news and hate speech, which can exacerbate political divisions and fuel violence, he noted.’

The Caritas Executive Director noted that, religious leaders can use their moral authority to hold political leaders accountable and to encourage them to prioritize the common good over personal or partisan interests. They can also provide spiritual support and guidance to their congregations during what can be a stressful and divisive time.

Overall he said, the role of religious leaders in the coming elections in Sierra Leone is crucial for promoting a peaceful, democratic, and just society.
