Catholic Priest Laments on Fake News

The Executive Director of Caritas Freetown, Rev. Father Peter Konteh has lamented on the worrying situation of fake news that has found a common place in Sierra Leone.
“Fake news is a growing problem in today's society, and it can have serious consequences for our communities. It can spread misinformation, incite fear and division, and damage trust among people. In Sierra Leone, where peace is fragile, the spread of fake news can have even more damaging effects,” he said.
Fr. Konteh said as responsible citizens, it is important for us to be vigilant and discerning when it comes to the information we consume and share.
“Before forwarding any messages on WhatsApp or social media, we should take the time to verify the accuracy of the information. It is crucial that we do not contribute to the spread of fake news, as it can have harmful effects on our society,” he said.
The Caritas Executive Director said people should be mindful of the kind of news they spread around adding that by being mindful of the information one share and promoting fact-checking and verification, it can help to combat the spread of fake news in Sierra Leone.
