CGG Engage Parliament on Integration of Women’s Priority issues into CRC

The Campaign for Good Governance (CGG) with support from Trocaire on Wednesday 29th October 2024 engaged the female caucus of the Sierra Leone Parliament on the Integration of Women priority issues into the Constitutional Review Process.
The Gender Adviser in the Office of the President, Madam IJ Kabba in her opening remarks said the CRC has taken a long time but that the process continue. The review process is key to the advancement of women in Sierra Leone.
She called on the female caucus in parliament to take the process seriously noting that women issues needed to be entrenched in the constitution.
Giving the background of the process, CGG Programme Manager, Sahr Kendema said several activities continue but it still a long way to go.
He said there is now the Gender Equality and women empowerment ac t that now empowers women but it has to be in the constitution.
“When it comes to women issues, there is so much loopholes in the constitution. With the review ongoing we have an opportunity to contribute to that process. We want to have a gender responsive constitution,” he said.
The consultant for the development of the Communique, Valnora Edwin presenting the content of the communique said the communique gives the position of women as to what they want to see in the new constitution.
The communique was then presented by the Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs, Dr. Isata Mahoi to the President of Female Caucus in Parliament.
The president of the female Caucus in Parliament thanked CGG and all other partners including civil society organizations present for putting together the communique.
Campaign for Good Governance (CGG); the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs, ICSP partners and members of the Yellow Ribbon Campaign Group with support from Trocaire and IrishAid makes the presentation of the Sierra Leone Women’s Communiqué on the Constitutional Review process to the female parliamentarians to solicit their support for the integration of the communique recommendations into the revised 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone.
