The Executive Director of Caritas Freetown, Rev. Fr. Peter Konteh continues to preach and bring peace messages leading the way to a peaceful co-existence within the sub-region. The Catholic Priest who is known for his vocal stance on issues of national development again voice out the path to peace in the sub-region.

Father Konteh noted that a Vision of a Peaceful and Productive West Africa: Fostering Unity and Solidarity can be achieved.

He said West Africa, a region rich in cultural diversity and natural resources, has the potential to become a hub of peace, productivity, and socio-economic development. It is essential to envision a future where all countries in West Africa thrive together, fostering deep unity and solidarity.

This vision he said entails overcoming historical challenges, promoting good governance, and nurturing a sense of shared purpose among nations. By embracing this vision, we can pave the way for a brighter future for the entire region.

On Overcoming Historical Challenges, father Konteh noted that West Africa has experienced its fair share of conflicts, political instability, and economic disparities. However, envisioning a peaceful and productive future requires acknowledging these challenges and actively working towards resolving them. By learning from past mistakes, fostering reconciliation, and promoting dialogue, West African countries can break free from the cycle of violence and division.

He said strengthening Regional Cooperation, unity and solidarity among West African countries are crucial for collective progress. Regional integration initiatives, such as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), provide a platform for cooperation in various areas, including trade, security, and governance. Strengthening and expanding these regional frameworks will promote a sense of shared responsibility and enable countries to work together towards common goals.

On Promoting Good Governance, he said to achieve lasting peace and prosperity, West African nations must prioritize good governance. Transparent and accountable institutions, coupled with effective legal frameworks, can help combat corruption, promote social justice, and foster an environment conducive to economic growth. By ensuring that leaders are elected democratically and held accountable for their actions, West African countries can build trust among their citizens and create a solid foundation for unity.

‘There is every need in investing in Education and Skills Development and that Education is a powerful tool for empowering individuals and societies. West African countries must prioritize education and skills development to equip their citizens with the knowledge and abilities needed to contribute effectively to their communities. By investing in quality education, vocational training, and research institutions, West Africa can nurture a skilled workforce, drive innovation, and create opportunities for all,’ the Catholic Priest said.

Let us try by all means to harnessing Natural Resources Sustainably as West Africa is blessed with abundant natural resources, including oil, gas, minerals, and arable land. However, their sustainable management is essential to prevent resource-related conflicts and ensure long-term benefits for all. By adopting responsible and inclusive resource extraction practices, West African countries can generate revenue, promote equitable wealth distribution, and protect the environment for future generations.
